There are two kinds of hobby shops, those that have RC car tracks and those that don't. The ones that do are social gathering places where people go to race, mostly on weekends. When the economy is good, Larger facilities like The Hobby Stop can see over a hundred people on a race weekend.
Story can be inspired by, or directed by, environment. Start with a unique environment, craft a story that can only be told in that environment, and you'll end up with a unique story. In the film, both the RC hobby, model rocketry, and other items found in the store make a significant impact in the direction of the story.
